Import health requirements of Costa Rica for dogs and cats

If the animal travels accompanied by a person or under the care of a passenger

To travel with a dog or cat by air to Costa Rica from any member country of the European Union, the following documents from the country of origin must be presented:

  1. International health certificate (original and copy), issued in English or Spanish by a licensed veterinarian with his signature and stamp, certifying that the dog/cat was found to be healthy and free of any clinical sings of infectious disease. This examination must be conducted within 2 weeks of the departure date.
  2. Certificates of vaccination:
    1. Dogs must be vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and rabies.
    2. Cats must be vaccinated against rabies.

Note: Before your trip, please consult with your travel agent or airline regarding the conditions of transport for your pet.

If the animal travels alone

In this case, the pet will be handled as a commodity. Therefore, you must contact a person in Costa Rica to apply for all the permits, according to the requirements listed here (in Spanish): http://www.senasa.go.cr
